What are charter schools?
Charter schools are public schools operated independently of the local school board, often with a curriculum and educational philosophy different from the other schools in the system.
How are charter schools funded?
The money that it costs to educate each student follows
the student to the charter school. Charter schools receive a percentage of each school
district’s Average Daily Membership (per-pupil dollar amount) for any students from
that district. Because charter schools are expected to do more with less, they also
rely heavily on fundraising and partnerships.
Will the charter school raise my taxes?
No. Charter schools do not raise taxes. Charter
schools have absolutely no taxing authority.
Who can attend a charter school?
Anyone may attend a charter school. If there are
more applicants than available slots, students are chosen using a lottery system.
Typically, siblings of enrolled students are given preference.
